A gallery for a space of students in SectieC

CreatingSpaceEindoven supports the subculture of students in Eindhoven that
take over an empty urban space temporarily for creative use.

Eindhoven is a great town for creativity. The city government endorses creativity throughout the public sector, and there are many SMEs scattered all over the city taking advantage of the many empty industrial buildings. And this counts for the students in Eindhoven as well. Living and studying in Eindhoven have led me to see and experience many things, and one thing that definitely stands out is how students are extremely active outside of school, occupying spaces for themselves to do, well, whatever students would want to do if they could get their hands on a space for their own.

Or so, we try.

Some try so hard, in fact, that they go through all the trouble of finding a space and then figuring out who is actually in charge of the space and then convincing that person (or, in many cases that organization) why he or she should let a bunch of gritty students in their space who will most likely turn the space upside down and start upsetting the neighbors while asking to pay either nothing or something close to nothing as compensation, they, I mean the students, continue doing it after they graduate as well.

This happens all the time in Eindhoven. And although the culture of young independent creatives gathering together to form a collective to support each other is by all means nothing new in Western Europe, here I am focusing on some of the necessary conditions for such a culture to take root in the first place.

CreatingSpace is a temporary space OF students.

CreatingSpace is a project about students taking initiative to occupy a space temporarily. This means if there are no students who want a space in the first place, the project may as well go down to drain. But something as important as that is, if there are no people who are willing to provide such students with space, again this project just hit a thick brick wall.

This is why Eindhoven is such a wonderful place. There are many students eagerly hunting for spaces, to setup workspaces, organize events, make collaborations, and many other things, creating wonderful ideas and stuff along the way. And as I said, the city is an open place for creativity. So all we need to do now is show the city, and the community the benefits of opening empty spaces for students to use temporarily and ultimately convince them to do so.

Through the website CreatingSpaceEindhoven I am telling the student’s side of the story. At the website there are some information about the city, about the students, and of course about the project itself. But the main focus is on the map, which not only pinpoints some of the spaces initiated by students, but presents a simple gallery of pictures and videos that shares a glimpse of the students and their thoughts.

Currently I am in the process of meeting people around the city, sharing thoughts and formulating a proposal for a temporary space of students that is organized together and supported by the city and the community.
